The Armor of Fearlessness

How Garbha Saṃskāra, Yoga, and Kṣema Shape the Divine Spirit of Mahākāla

The Armor of Fearlessness

माण्टी and his loving wife were great devotees of Shiva. Their hearts carried a deep sorrow as they had no child. They performed a great Tapasyā, and their prayers were finally answered. His wife conceived, and their life was filled with hope. A strange stillness surrounded the pregnancy. Even after 9 months passed the baby was not born. Worried, माण्टी went to his wife and spoke to the child in the womb. My dearest child, please come out. We are waiting to hold you and to love you. To his astonishment, a small, clear voice answered from within. Father, I cannot. I am afraid of the world outside. I am afraid of a dangerous राक्षस named कालमार्ग. Here, I am safe. Why should I be born into a world of fear?

माण्टी was heartbroken. At that moment, Lord Shiva appeared and compassionately said, Dear couple, the child does not fear a राक्षस. It is just a reflection of the fear you both have! A mother's womb is not just a body; it is the child's first classroom. Every thought, every fear, and every joy of the parents becomes a lesson for the soul within. You have been so worried about the future, that you have accidentally taught your child to fear life itself. Now, you must teach it a new lesson. Speak to your child of courage. Tell it that the soul is eternal and fearless. This sacred teaching to an unborn child is the very essence of Garbha Saṃskāra - nurturing the mind and spirit even before birth

Following Shiva's guidance, माण्टी and his wife spent their days speaking to the baby in the womb, chanting Mantras, and filling the baby's world with courage, love, and the ultimate truth. Soon, a beautiful and fearless baby was born. Because this child had conquered fear, he earned the glorious name Mahākāla, meaning the Great One who knows past, present and future and has nothing to be afraid about. This is the same Mahākāla whom we worship at Ujjaini, Madhya Pradesh!

This incident beautifully explains a profound teaching from Śrī Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavadgītā. योग & क्षेम. What are योग & क्षेम? In Sanskrit, it is said: अप्राप्तस्य प्राप्तिः योगः - To gain what you do not have is योग. प्राप्तस्य परि-रक्षणं क्षेमः - To protect what you have gained is क्षेम. I repeat - To gain what you do not have is योग. To protect what you have gained is क्षेम

माण्टी and his wife performed great ceremonies to have a child. That was their Yoga - they gained what they did not have. But they almost failed to protect the child's spirit from fear. That protection is Kṣema. Each year during Navarātri, through prayer and devotion, we perform Yoga to obtain the blessings of Shakti, the Divine energy. But the real test is Kṣema - do we protect that Divine energy all through the year? Do we guard that inner peace and goodness? To protect the goodness we gain, we must be more than friends to ourselves. We must be warriors. In the Vedas, there is a special word for such a warrior: अप्रतिरथ - a warrior who has no equal, who is undefeatable!
